Revadim launch conference

[15 Apr 12] A large audience attended the conference that was held on March 27 in Ashkelon to present the Revadim initiative, its goals and achievements so far to those who carry out and enable the work, including municipal Directors of Education, Ministry of Education officials, school principals and teachers, and Revadim staff.

The event was opened with greetings by the Mayor of Ashkelon and representatives of the partners – the Ministry of Education, JDC Israel and the Rashi foundation, followed by the keynote speaker: Gabi Ashkenazi, former Chief of Staff of the IDF who joined Rashi recently as Chairman of the Board. He talked about the parallels between the challenges faced by the IDF and the education system, and the critical importance of education in shaping the students' world as adults.

A session titled "Revadim in Practice" discussed various issues connected with the operation of the initiative and its impact on the schools. Short video clips provided a glimpse into different components of the program, such as closing of gaps and individual treatment.

In her closing speech, the Director of Revadim Dalia Perez said: "Many of the challenges I face today on the professional and organizational level are familiar to me from my personal experience as a school girl in Sderot. Although Israeli society has changed greatly since then, many issues are too often still relevant in schools in the periphery: children for whom the school and the home languages are in conflict; schools which must constantly cope with this built-in tension; limited resources that are inadequate for addressing the complex needs (…) This is why we are here: to stand by the schools and help them as much as we can to fulfill their complex task."
