Ashalim was established 25 years ago by the Thierry Slama Association to serve children of Be'er Sheva and the Negev region. It is the only residential setting in the area of Be'er Sheva to address the needs of children aged 7-14 requiring a therapeutic/post-hospitalization solutions. Today, Ashalim Dorset is home to 70 children, most of whom come from situations of personal, familial and social distress, and in some cases, even physical and emotional abuse. Most suffer from learning disabilities and difficulties; many have severe emotional problems that are likely to develop into personality disorders if not treated correctly. The goal of the village is to provide these children with therapy, rehabilitation, education and enrichment in order to enable them to integrate into normative society.
Expanding and Upgrading the Village
Rashi has been involved in the implementation of a master plan prepared for the village which calls for reassignment of functions of buildings and renovations, and expansion to enable the village to grow to nearly 100 children.
One of the dormitory buildings has been renovated; the Shazar Special Education School (situated outside the village) which is attended by many children from the village has been renovated. Currently, a new dormitory building for 24 children is under construction, and in planning is a multi-purpose hall containing a new kitchen and dining hall.
At the same time, Rashi and our partners are supporting the village in its upgrade of the care it gives, in an effort to make it an exemplary therapeutic/post-hospitalization setting and the preferred placement option for young children from the southern region.
